Dinner at NEU

The only time I was ever intimidated by the dining halls at Smith was my overnight as a prospie. What do I do with my plate when I'm done, and the remaining liquid in my cup? Toss it, is the answer that I eventually got. But anyways, this past weekend (and a bit over Spring Break as well) I got to experience that feeling yet again.

I hoofed it (well, my dad drove me...) over to Northeastern University in Boston, MA to spend some time with a special someone, and I had to eat eventually. Wide-eyed and overwhelmed with choice (and bright whiteness!) I was faced with International Village, one of the dining facilities at the school. This massive room had everything - vegan, indian, asian, salads made in front of you, pizza, pasta... basically more variety in one place than we get in a week at Smith!

Everyone (so many eyes on me) probably knew I was an outsider, considering my inability to follow status quo. You don't serve yourself because there are workers that do that for you, and its all very impersonal. I was a bit put out, to be honest. They seemed a bit mean, but maybe they had just had a long day. The automated dish-taker thing (I really have no idea what to call it) was easy enough to figure out though, as they have something like it at UMASS.

I had two slices of teriaki chicken pizza, an apple, and chocolate milk (from a machine! No mixing!). I didn't think it was as good as the pizza we get here (I never thought I'd say that), but I was satisfied. I wish I had gone for something a bit more unique or exotic in retrospect, considering all the choice I had! I'll probably get another opportunity in the future though, so I'll try for something better next time!

Now I want to try the food at more schools, as it's pretty interesting to compare the experience. Smith can't be the worst in the world! After all, dining services does make a fair amount of our food in the kitchens, which can't be beat by mass-produced frozen food (I hope)!
