The Glories of the Oatmeal-Raisin Combo

My grandmother has never once baked for me. No lies, and no exaggerations. She just is not that type of woman. Funny story though, she once wanted to. Before I was born she ripped an oatmeal-raisin cookie recipe out of a homemakers magazine, and elicited a somewhat perplexed response from my mother. After all, she hadn't baked for own kids either!

Well, in the end I never got those cookies. Her brief motivations to be a doting grandmother (I'm the only child of her various progeny) were lost, and instead she gives me money rather than cookies baked with familial love. I'm not complaining though!

However, she seems to have put into motion a bit of predestined occurrence. Perhaps it registered in my fetal psyche (I doubt it!) what may have been waiting for me on the outside (in a few years post-partum, I suppose), because I frikkin' love oatmeal raisin cookies. And plain oatmeal with raisins. It's a combination that can't be beat. Some people throw down such cookies when they take a bite, mistaking them for delicious chocolate chip varieties. I'm the opposite. Those little brown chips just ruin my day!

Gimme Gimme!

I've had some funny experiences with the cookie this year... I treated my homesickness blues (brought on by a sweet letter from my parents) with a stellar CC cookie (I recommend them!), burned an attempt to bake them with a friend over Thanksgiving (the fire alarms in my parents' house went off, stressing out everyone involved), and had a successful second attempt at the baking over Spring Break. I was told "I'm not sure it'll work out between us... that may be a deal breaker" on a date, when I revealed my distaste for chocolate chip (his favorite) and preference for this type of sweet (he hates them!). Funny funny, although it most certainly has worked out!
