In light of our class conversation about all of the things capable of being deep-fried, I thought I would dedicated this week's post to Twinkies, a common deep-friable item.
Last year, I remember when everyone I knew was up in arms about the
cessation of the production of Twinkies in the United States. I too, a Twinkie lover,
although disappointed, was not about to lose sleep over the untimely end of
this snack. I was clearly so unaffected by their absence, that I actually
forgot about their very existence until this week when playing around on the
Internet. I had the pleasure of stumbling upon a recipe for homemade
Twinkies! This startling revelation led me to Google the current status of the
beloved Twinkie and I was pleased to find that as of late March, Twinkies are
slated to make a return to stores this summer! In addition to this glorious
news, I was also shocked to discover that the filling of the Twinkie used to be
flavored with banana extract. The only reason I ever had Twinkies was for the
creamy vanilla middle, and any other flavor is unfathomable to me.
When Twinkies come back this summer I hope to try my hand at deep-frying them. Hopefully I won't set anything on fire.
Just in case you just can’t wait until summer to get your Twinkie fix,
here is the recipe for homemade Twinkies:
