Judie's! The home of the popover

Due to the recent events in Boston, the NEWMAC Rowing Championships were postponed to Sunday. Having practice or races every Saturday morning since the end of February, my friend Piper and I decided to celebrate our first free Friday night and go out to dinner in Amherst. We weren't really sure what the options were so we wandered around Amherst Centre for a while looking through the windows of restaurants. Judie's caught our eye mainly because everyone inside looked so happy. From the outside, the restaurant looked homey yet modern and everyone was having a great time. And how could you resist a restaurant that claimed to be the home of the popover?!
Being seated was a little confusing, they make you wait in line and the hostess comes to you. Instead of the normal restaurant system where you go to the hostess. But once we were seated, everything was quick, friendly and upbeat. As we browsed the menu we were a little confused as to why a single popover cost 4.25. But then we looked around and the other tables, the popovers were HUGE.
Piper ordered the Gumbo Popover, "chicken,, sausage & shrimp sautéed in a spicy, traditional Gumbo Sauce with fire-roasted corn, mushrooms, tomatoes, leeks & rice." All this is served under a giant popover, with the idea that you use it to scoop up the gumbo. I ordered the chicken barbecue sandwich, "grilled chicken breast with melted provolone, barbecue sauce, bacon, lettuce and tomato, on a Ciabatta Roll." Served with a side of fries. Both dishes were fantastic but the best part of the experience was definitely the popover. Piper saved it for last and we ate it, tearing bits of the fluffy dough and dipping them in apple butter. It was perfectly crispy on the outside and the dough had that perfect gooey popover texture.

This is one of my favorite restaurants! My family discovered it in 2005 and every time we came back East, we detoured to Judie's (sometimes 2 to 3 hours out of our way). Their veggie burgers are pretty good, but I never have tried the popovers. My recommendation for anyone going to Judie's is to try their fries. The fries are out of this world. That is what kept my family coming back. They are gigantic chunks of potatoes, dipped in the most delicious batter you can think of and fried to golden perfection.
