I so enjoyed the Rare Book Room librarian's description yesterday of Julia Child and Charlotte Turgeon hanging out together as Smithies, cooking together and hamming it up. It made me look around the room at all of you, wondering where you'll be in another 20 years, and what food you'll be cooking.
Charlotte Turgeon stayed in the valley after graduating, and her granddaughter is a friend of mine (Sarah Turgeon--she teaches Neuroscience at Amherst College. Our sons play soccer together. I like to think of this as my very close personal connection to Julia Child.
Here's an article from the Boston Globe that ran just after Charlotte Turgeon's death in 2009. If you look closely at the accompanying photo (which I'll post below), I believe Julia is using hedge pruners to cut the tail off a giant fish...
